Hi there,
Boy this picture brought back memories! My parents lived in Baldwin Park from 1946 to 1990. We did our weekly food shopping there, had a chocolate chip ice cream cone from the Creamery, I got my corrective oxfords from the shoe store in the back, drooled over the separate toy area and saw Santa every year in the middle of the store. was born in 1955 so I grew up w/Crawfords.
I also remember the TV department, where I saw my first bubble screen. I rode the mechanical horse in the front of the store and had my professional picture taken in their sundries and notions area.
My parents knew (if I can remember right) Johnny Crawford and I also remember the shopping bags were a light pink-ish color w/vintage designs or something on them.
My parents are gone now but I still have several items from Crawfords. What is your story?
Please respond to cherylechapman@hotmail.com . BTW, I still have a steel jar opener from the lumber yard down the road from Crawfords. The lumber yard burned down several times.
Wow! Fantastic website. Thank you for putting these memories online. It feels like my own personal time machine!
My grandmother and step-grandfather were married at The Tumbleweed square dance place. I wasn't born yet but I still have the
black and white photo of them in western wear, getting "hitched" before a preacher with my older sister & their square dance folks in the background.
Your website reminded me there was a Van de Kamp bakery in there as well. I remember the mini pecan & lemon pies.
Also, my dad Bob Chapman got our spindly Christmas tree from Crawfords every year.
It is sad to think that time and cultures slowly eroded this iconic store. This was a special place for middle class suburbia and kids back then could feel safe wandering the store alone or hanging out at the amusement park.
Also, FYI ...in one of your photos where people are at an outside drawing, I swear one of the men in western garb is my grandfather, Darrel Kay.
Whatever happened to the Crawford family? I live in Carson City, NV now.
Sincerely, Cheryle
