to me
Gary...
I randomly ended up on your San Gabriel Valley website while researching for another project.
Oh my goodness, you absolutely nailed it!  That area has changed so much since my family moved to Bromley Avenue (Francisquito and Willow) in 1957.
Our pink track home with the green rock roof, on a cul-de-sac, was the American Dream come true.
The weeds were a constant battle, we built a sandlot baseball field across the street on two empty lots, used carpet samples for bases and started the game in June, ended it in September and never kept score.  We walked to school and bought Cinnamon toothpicks at George's Liquor store to smuggle past the nuns at school.
Our family attended St. Louis of France Church and School, Bishop Amat HS and MT SAC and Cal Poly Pomona...which was about as far as one thought of going at that time.
We called the Edgewood and Vineland theaters every Wednesday to see what the new film would be so we could plan our weekends.
Ate giant banana splits (.35) at the Thrifty's next to the Food Giant, where we would stand for hours at the bakery counter watching the Donners Bakery gals spray paint cakes.
Our family  owned our little $12, 500. home until we sold it in 2007 for $480.00.
Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Enjoy Summer!

Just checked it out...
Our street ran perpendicular to Barrydale,, but you are correct, everyones memories from that era seem to coincide.
I was at a luncheon at the Music Center yesterday, sitting to the Director of Security...everyone at our table was from a different state or Country...but somehow both of us were from the SGV, it was so fun reminiscing, I think we made everyone at our a little envious.
Grand Opening's were such a big deal at that time.  Ladies would wear little purple flower corsages all day after sampling toothpick studded samples for lunch at whatever supermarket had just opened it's doors...and then all the kids would end up there after school because of the "free samples"!
I remember the "welcome wagon" that greeted us when we moved in to our track home.  You went directly to the quarry to get rocks for landscaping and one of several dairy's to get manure to feed your lawn (seeded, not sod).
I could go on, and on.....Thank you again for memorializing our youth!
