to me
Gary...
Love all the old images from West Covina and environs. Thanks!
My parents bought a newly built home in WC in April 1955 (738 S. Greenberry Dr.). I remember much from those days and through the decades that followed.
One major memory is of the taco place that sat on the northeast corner of the "Old Center" property at what I think was the intersection of Service and Glendora. It was my mother's favourite "fast food" joint, and I can remember going there with her to watch the tacos being made -- and, yep, crisped in lard, not today's politically correct flavourless "healthy" oil.
Got any photos of that place? It wasn't part of the "strip mall" but instead a stand-alone business (across Glendora from Boulevard Cleaners and that grocery store...which was Market Basket?).
I can close my eyes and still smell the wondrous aroma of those tacos and such...just like I can still smell the rubber in the old Western Auto (which was owned by Mr. Guthman...and was a few doors from the Coronet 5 & Dime). But for the life of me, I can't remember the name of the place. Do you have any photos in your archives?
Meanwhile, here's a photo for you
This was taken by my mother sometime between October 1955 and March 1956. I was 5 or so. It was on our backyard patio.
And for even more fun, oh my, how some things never change. Here's a shot of me in Tucson, AZ...taken in December 2004. :D
Be in touch...and thanks, again.
